What you need to know about refrigerator energy classes

What you need to know about refrigerator energy classes

The energy class is an important criterion for choosing refrigerators and since there has been more and more talk about it lately, we decided to write an article on this topic. Consequently, if you are more curious about the energy class of refrigerators or, why not, household appliances in general, then you are in the right place.

What is the energy class?

The energy class refers to the level or, better said, the classification index of household appliances in relation to their energy consumption. In other words, for regular users, the energy class indicates how much an appliance consumes. This means it should be a detail you need to take into account.

What does energy labeling mean?

Energy labeling was born following the initiatives adopted by the European Commission, which aimed to considerably reduce not only the impact of greenhouse gas emissions, but above all energy consumption. Over time, there have been a number of amendments that have changed our lives in one way or another.

Among these we find amendments such as 1996/92/EC, which aimed at several common rules for the internal electricity market, or amendment 2001/77/EC which promoted the obtaining of electricity from renewable sources. Equally important is amendment 2006/32/EC which promotes energy efficiency among the final consumer.

What does an energy label look like?

Above, I took an energy label from Wikipedia. As you can see, it shows different symbols but also useful information about household appliances.

However, some changes have recently been made. This is why the «+» is no longer used for energy class A, but the classification is made with the letters AG.

This means that we have the lowest possible energy consumption with a class A appliance, while a class G appliance will have very poor energy efficiency. We have an article on our blog with lots of useful information on the new energy classes. Read it too.

On the energy label you will also find other useful details such as manufacturer name, model, energy efficiency class, annual energy consumption, capacity/volume, noise level and more.

Generally the energy label is found on the surface of the refrigerator, on the door, both at the top and at the bottom.

How is the energy efficiency index calculated

As regards the determination of the energy efficiency class, this occurs following a basic index, then used in a fairly simple calculation formula: I = C / C(R). C refers to the actual consumption of the device, while C(R) represents the optimal consumption we want to refer to.

Why choose energy class A for refrigerators?

Finally, you may ask yourself why choose energy class A for refrigerators? Well, you will probably be scared by the higher price of Class A refrigerators, but it is worth the investment because you will have less electricity consumption, which means long-term savings.

You can use the information on the energy label of the appliance, referring to the price paid for electricity, and in this way you will convince yourself that it is worth choosing an energy class A refrigerator.
