Alternatives to the Christmas tree | Install cheaply

A traditional Christmas tree looks very cute. Every year a new Christmas tree is bought and, among other things, it causes a lot of stress – something you will already have enough of during the Christmas period. Treat yourself to a relaxing Christmas – with one of our eight Christmas tree alternatives.

1. For those looking for bargains

Why spend so much money on a tree that will only be used for a few days and then thrown away? More and more people are asking this. You will find alternatives that are above all economical.

Christmas tree shaped lights

All you need is a rectangular board in the size of your choice. There’s also a set of lights, some screws, and a cordless screwdriver. First draw the outline of a Christmas tree on the board. Now screw the screws along the lines to obtain the typical shape of a Christmas tree.

Important: do not screw the screws in completely, but leave them protruding by about a centimeter. Then wrap the chain of lights around the resulting fixed points. Make sure the plug end is facing down. Place the card near an electrical outlet on the wall. Switch on, done!

2. For those in a hurry

Christmas again? Wasn’t it just November? If this happens to you all the time, you may be the type of person for this alternative. It can be achieved with a few strokes of chalk.

Creative whiteboard

You will need: a blackboard and chalk. Now draw your Christmas tree on the board so that it fills the entire board. That’s all! Place the board upright in an open space on the wall. As centrally as possible, i.e. as an eye-catcher: this ensures a Christmas atmosphere in your living room.

This variant has only one disadvantage: hanging the Christmas baubles is impossible! But if this is contrasted with a mountain of gifts at the foot of the work of art, it will hardly be noticed.

3. Just something different!

This alternative really has it all. And not just because it requires craftsmanship. The result is also more for people open to experiments.

Vintage-regal in Christbaumform

The outline of a Christmas tree can be wonderfully recreated with wood scraps. Discarded shelves work well for this. Place them next to each other on the floor. Then draw the contours of a Christmas tree on it with felt or soft pencil. Then I saw the boards along the lines. Now join the sawn parts together: wooden pins and a little glue ensure a stable connection.

What emerges is something halfway between an unusual Christmas tree and a shelf. Put together like this, the only thing missing is that something: small projections on which to place gifts, for example chocolate figurines. Or you can hammer in the nails and hang the Christmas tree baubles.

4. Create space in small rooms

Lack of space is a problem in many apartments. This alternative helps! Unlike a real tree, it doesn’t take up any space. It is also very cute and can be further designed with simple means.

A tree made with washi tape

Colorful decorative tape is becoming more and more popular. And rightly so: he doesn’t just create beautiful things. If you no longer need it, you can remove it without leaving any residue. Try it: Start by painting the outline of a Christmas tree on the wall. Then follow the outline with washi tape. That’s all: the tree is tall.

You can finish it all off with a little light: simply decorate it with a small string of fairy lights. If you draw it with clear tape, it will look like the chain is hanging directly from the tree. If you also have mini Christmas baubles, you can attach them in the same way.

5. It definitely never stings!

If you love Christmas trees but hate needles, now there’s an alternative. The principle is as simple as the string of lights on the wall. However, it requires a little more craftsmanship and also more material.

Branches decorated on the wall

This alternative to the Christmas tree surprises with its appearance. Depending on the design it almost looks real, yet it is just a flat image on the wall.

Collect slightly thicker branches, that is, they should have a diameter of four or five centimeters. Then saw the branches in half to obtain several shorter and shorter pieces. These parts make up the basic structure of your Christmas tree: spreading downwards, fix everything to the wall or to a table. Leave a little space between each one. Finally, glue the figures or pine cones with a heat gun. You can also wrap a string of lights around the branches – the tree looks even more festive when it’s well lit!

6. For those who care about the environment

You can do it without a tree! This protects the environment and gives you a nice feeling, especially at Christmas. There is also an attractive and unusual appearance. So why not give up everything that has to do with wood?

A tree made only of balls

Again, you need a board if you want to protect your walls. This time a regular cork board will do. Stand them upright and have all the balls you have ready. You will also need lots of thumbtacks.

Hang only the baubles in the shape of a Christmas tree. Leave as little space as possible in the middle, just hang everything next to each other. Get an alternative Christmas tree that is above all one thing: colorful. If you don’t have Christmas tree baubles, you can easily replace them: colored paper or felt are particularly suitable.

7. For the rebels

Choose this option if you really want to refuse consumption. You will need: some fabric and a large cactus.

Cactus tree

Simply hang your cactus with tinsel, ribbon, or whatever else is around the house. As far as materials are concerned, anything is possible, the important thing is that it is colourful. When it comes to Christmas atmosphere, this alternative is probably in last place. When it comes to originality, however, it is miles ahead. And it can be decorated in seconds. The only thing you should pay attention to are the plugs!

8. For people with two left hands

Don’t like DIY at all? It does not matter. You too can be creative: just look at a ladder standing from the side…

Ladder or pyramid shaped books

What do a ladder and a Christmas tree have in common? If you look at an upright ladder from the side, you will see the typical pyramid shape. And this is precisely the principle behind this alternative to the Christmas tree: find something in the shape of a pyramid and decorate it.

It’s up to you which basic structure you choose. The old ladder is just as suitable as a cleverly arranged pile of books. The only important thing is the decoration and maybe some well-wrapped gifts underneath. And now you can get creative. There are a thousand things suitable as an alternative to the Christmas tree. Depending on your mood, you can organize the celebration of joy completely individually. Only one thing is important: staying relaxed and having a peaceful Christmas period!
