Do you want to reduce energy consumption and save on energy costs? Then you probably already know the often-cited tips for saving energy, such as not leaving electrical appliances in standby mode or switching lighting to LEDs. Here you can find out how to reduce energy costs in unconventional ways.
1 Recharge electric vehicles externall
As often as possible, try not to charge your electric vehicles at home. If you want to stop on a tour with your e-bike, take advantage of the free charging stations that many restaurants make available. The same goes for your electric car, as many service providers lure customers to their homes with free electricity. Why not charge your car while you shop? There are currently over 4,400 free charging stations in Germany – maybe there is one near you!
Or simply ask your employer if it is possible to connect your electric vehicle to the electricity grid while you work.
2 Stay at home less
Admittedly, this tip sounds a little strange at first. But make one thing clear: every minute and every hour you spend at home consumes energy, for example for lights, TV, online media, etc. Maintain personal contacts and at the same time save on energy costs by visiting neighbors or friends and family in your area (walking/cycling).
3 Change purchasing behavior
Many necessary activities consume energy, such as grocery shopping. For larger errands, simply drop off the car and use a delivery service. Such food delivery options are available, especially in metropolitan areas, and the trend is on the rise. Plan your purchases because the delivery service is often free for orders above a certain value.
When you shop online, you can also save on travel costs associated with visiting physical stores. For example, if you buy furniture online, delivery is often free.
4 Shared family activities – the one room solution
If you live in a multi-person household, shared activities are a way to reduce your energy use a bit. It is obvious that, if everyone stays in their own room, they will have to bear greater costs for electricity and possibly for heating. The family gathers in one room for a game or movie night.
5 Cooking & Baking: shorter preparation
There is significant savings potential when preparing meals. In general, foods require different preparation times and therefore different electricity consumption. Example: Briefly fried steaks vs. oven roasted pork. If you want to save energy when cooking, you need to make sure when choosing food that the oven runs as short as possible/does not run at all and that only 1 or 2 cooking plates are used.
6 Use the kettle correctly
True to the motto «Even small animals make a mess», fill the kettle as needed, i.e. only with the amount of water you actually need at that moment. But: Be sure to pay attention to the minimum capacity of the stove!
7 Free time in the open air
As already mentioned, when you are away from home you use less energy. There are a few ways to spend a little more time outdoors and do something for your health at the same time. After dinner, regularly take a long walk or short bike rides, obviously without electrical assistance.
8 children come out
What applies to adults should not stop at children. Occasionally send children out the door to meet playmates or friends. There are playgrounds, youth clubs, sports clubs and skating facilities everywhere. This is significantly better than playing for hours on the PC – both for energy consumption and for children’s development.
9 Go to bed earlier
The proverb says: «He who sleeps does not sin»… and also does not consume energy. This statement is trivial, but putting it into practice is easier said than done. Because each person has their own fixed sleep rhythm. Yet it remains to be said that going to bed earlier reduces energy consumption.
10 Less home office
If you think about working from home, Corona measures immediately come to mind. If regulations allow, you should return to your workplace as quickly as possible, as there are electricity and heating costs when working from home.
Regardless of the pandemic, the home office serves other purposes as well.
Here you deal with annoying paperwork, file your tax return or search the Internet for travel offers and new purchases. You could do all this in the office. Ask your employer if you can use your workplace for private purposes during your lunch break or after work.
Conclusion
There are more or less fixed energy costs, such as the refrigerator or heating in the living rooms, where there is a certain saving potential. Related energy saving tips can be found on the Internet. Here you will find a tip or two on how to reduce your energy costs by changing your individual behavior.
