Tips for moving with a child

Tips for moving with a child

A move usually means an improvement: finally more space or the first apartment together. However, changing location also involves effort and this can be particularly stressful for a family with a small child. Good planning makes moving with a baby easier and can allow new parents to tackle all the tasks ahead with a little more calm.

Plan everything well

Before moving, parents should sit down together and think carefully about what tasks need to be completed. Typical tasks before the move include cleaning and renovating the old apartment. Moving is a good opportunity to get rid of some items that are no longer needed. In addition, the old apartment needs to be cleaned up or cosmetic repairs are necessary. The new apartment also needs to be renovated, so work such as wallpapering or painting the walls needs to be done.

If a lot of furniture needs to be transported, moving helpers are needed: family, friends or a moving company. It is best for parents to give themselves enough time for the move and ask for leave in advance. You need to purchase packing materials and boxes and book a moving truck. Parents should also think about changing addresses, placing orders, re-registering the landline and ADSL connection and the electricity supplier. It may make sense to arrange for a babysitter to look after your young child on moving day. Then you have to buy the furniture for the new apartment and everything has to be arranged. In this checklist you will find everything you need to set it up.

Pay attention to important dates when you move

If the child is to attend a nursery in the new place of residence, registration should take place up to one year in advance. As a rule, the old rental contract must be canceled three months in advance. You should apply for holidays and get offers from removal companies and tradesmen up to eight weeks before the move. A reshipment order can be arranged at the post office four weeks in advance. The household goods can be packed one or two days before the move. The family must re-register at the resident registration office in the new home community no later than two weeks after the move.

Packing for a move with a baby

It can be distressing for the child as familiar objects gradually disappear into boxes. It is therefore appropriate to let a small child help him with this task, even if it is only small tasks. This helps girls and boys better understand what is happening and parents can explain that the boxes are only for transportation. Perhaps there will be protests when the beloved toys are boxed up. Parents should therefore let the child have his favorite stuffed animal. It is not recommended to use the move to sort out children’s things.

Because the change of location is already stressful for the little ones. When something familiar disappears completely, it can trigger fear of loss. The children’s room in the old apartment should remain intact for as long as possible. It is therefore best to leave the toys until last. You can then set up the children’s room in the new apartment first, although the new house must first be childproofed (e.g. by protecting sockets).

Renovating with a child

New carpets, floor coverings or furniture emit organic hydrocarbons. These fumes can be especially harmful to children. If the new apartment is renovated before the move, parents should pay attention to low-emission wall paints. Lime paint is particularly recommended. Parents should avoid PVC floors, especially in children’s rooms, as these floors often emit harmful substances. When it comes to fabrics, fathers and mothers can look for labels such as «textile trust» or organic quality, especially if a carpet is in the Child’s room is transferred.

Avoid stress

If it is not possible to hire a babysitter, the child will have to be entrusted to the grandparents on the day of the move. This saves the child a lot of stress. Changes to the children’s room should be avoided so that the new children’s room largely resembles the old room that the girls or boys know. Especially the little ones need their familiar environment to feel pleasantly safe. Boxes with favorite toys should be at hand so that girls or boys can unpack them right away in their new home.

In addition to the baby’s favorite things, a change of clothes, baby food and diapers should also always be available. It is also possible to bring the child to the new environment before the actual move and show him the living space and his bedroom. If the child already understands this, parents can explain in simple terms that a change is coming.

Conclusion: moving with a child without stress

To ensure that moving with a small child does not become a stress test, good planning is essential. Many things can be arranged in advance, such as the help of a moving company.

It is better for the child to spend the day with a babysitter or grandparents, so that they do not notice the commotion. But it can also be included, for example when putting toys together and of course when unpacking them in the new room.
