A month after the presentation of the Latvian National Design Awards, on May 7th this year it was the turn of the Lithuanians. The Lithuanian design prize GOOD DESIGN is a national competition organized by the Lithuanian Design Forum since 2012. Every year the most successful recent design ideas from Lithuania are selected and celebrated. All companies and designers based in Lithuania are invited to participate and only projects that are no more than two years old can be registered.
You can read who won the race last year here.
This year, more than 230 entries were submitted in ten competition categories: furniture and lighting, interiors, interior elements, concept design, costumes, fashion accessories, product and industrial design, publications, services and social design and visual identity.
Here is a handpicked selection of my favorite projects this year:
BaBa modular sofa system
BaBa Modular Sofa System took first place in the furniture and lighting category and was designed by the Iskos-Berlin design agency for the Lithuanian furniture manufacturer Jotjot
The latest technologies were used in the production of this seating series, from CNC milling to the production of a casting to fill the BaBa body with molten foam. The density, flexibility and hardness of the cast foam guarantee maximum seating comfort and dimensional stability even many years after use. The internal frame and legs are made of powder-coated steel. The fabric for upholstered furniture is a 3D fabric specially developed to perfectly adapt to the unusual shape. The thin and elegant steel legs underline the soft roundness of the body, with a unique shape.
FLEX console
Designer Marija Puipaitė won second place in the furniture and lighting category with the FLEX console for IDDO Slow Living.

The FLEX steel console or coffee table is characterized by its manufacturing process: a single piece of powder-coated metal is laser cut and bent, without fasteners and annoying assembly.
LOW INGENUITY Stuhl
The etc.etc won third place in the furniture and lighting category. Study with the new product of the NAÏVE series, the NAÏVE LOW chair for EMKO.
The Low chair is the youngest member of the NAÏVE family and, like the other parts of the family, is characterized by a body that can be easily unscrewed and folded flat. Its main feature is a wide leather strap that secures the backrest to the seat. The original combination of wood, leather and fabric makes the armchair visually distinctive. Although small and compact, the low chair looks inviting and is really comfortable to sit on.
STRUCTURE for wardrobe
From the designer The FRAME wardrobe designed by Mattias Stenberg for the Lithuanian furniture company Jotjot not only holds clothes neatly, but also features an unusual stone or wooden bowl for smaller items. The tub can also be used as a rainwater collector for umbrellas. The materials are flexible: steel, natural stone or oak.
Lina Žvirblytė and Vida Strasevičiūtė, who received second place in the costume category, surprise with the modular coat, which can be flexibly adapted to the seasons. A very welcome item of clothing in times of overproduction! The windproof and water-repellent raincoat can be complemented, depending on the weather, with a fur or wool coat made from sustainable materials, and each variant still offers a unique look!
12 month calendar
Personally I found third place in the publications category very interesting and successful. Despite the glut of monthly and wall calendars, designer Zigmas Vagonis of &andstudio still managed to surprise. The playful, retro look of the calendar is a real eye-catcher and at the same time practical, because the weeks are clearly marked, but the transition is continuous and smooth.
SMÅK sieve and cutting board
Designer Barbora Adamonytė-Keidūnė, who has successfully designed products for the Lithuanian brand EMKO and Namous, participated in this year’s Design Award with an innovative cutting board with sieve function, which won second prize in the Product and Industrial Design category.
This cutting board and colander combo makes everyday cooking easier. In the first stage the board can be rolled up, fastened with a button and used as a sieve. After washing the vegetables, SMÅK can be spread out and used as a cutting board. The cutting board is made of a thin polypropylene film and its shape makes it convenient to store or simply place against the wall, making it an internal graphic element for the kitchen.
