Baltic Design Shop turns 5 incredible years! I sold my first products on May 1, 2014. There were two pillowcases from Monika Järg and a travel poster from Bold Tuesday. I was so excited and grateful and even then I felt that it would be the beginning of a great success story.
At that time I opened an eBay store in order to quickly sell the products and gradually build the online store. I no longer manage the marketplace shop because the online shop has established itself very successfully and most customers find me through word of mouth.
How it all started
I often get asked how I started my online store. The story went like this: in 2013 I was intensely looking for lights for the living room of my house in Estonia. But since we have walls with exposed beams in the living area, it wasn’t easy to find the right lights. At one point I went to Tallinn, the capital of Estonia, to look for local lighting manufacturers. What I found almost left me speechless: as a fan of minimalist Nordic design I found an incredible variety of great design products for the home, all designed by Estonian designers and made by local artisans.
I couldn’t believe that truly original products were not yet known even in Germany. My friends and acquaintances here in Germany were also really enthusiastic about furniture, accessories and home textiles, so over time it became more and more clear to me that I would like to present and sell beautiful things here too. When the opportunity to put my ideas into practice suddenly arose in 2014, I didn’t hesitate for long and founded my own shop.
By the way, during my shopping trip in Tallinn I found the right lights: they come from Keha3, an innovative manufacturer of lighting for private and public spaces, whose lamps I have been offering since day one in the Baltic Design Shop.
5 years of Baltic Design Shop – a provisional achievement
Even though five years ago I had no idea about sales, online stores, marketing and the like, this time has been extremely educational, incredibly exciting and very, very successful. You can always gain knowledge, but what really matters are good products. My first impression and intuition did not disappoint: the design of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania is competitive, in demand and well received. Customers are satisfied and my manufacturers look forward to new markets for their amazing designs
At the end of the five years of Baltic Design Shop, I am particularly satisfied with the incredible number of friendly customers that I have been able to meet in that period, as well as the almost friendly relationships with my designers, with whom I am in close contact and exchange in order to be able to serve the demand in Germany even better. Last year, a second online shop was also created for requests from business customers and more and more journalists are interested in Baltic design, which is already celebrated as a new fashion.
Looking to the future
A lot has happened. And I have so much more to do! Employees are needed to better meet growing demand. The gift shop should be built in such a way that it can make full use of the already visible potential. And the most important thing: brand awareness for the design of the Baltics should be continuously increased, so that after the next five years at the latest every design-conscious German knows that the Baltics are on a par with Denmark and Holland when it comes to design.
But first let’s celebrate! For a week, until May 7th, there is a 5% discount on the entire range of the Baltic Design Shop! No minimum order value! It’s worth getting! Discount code: 5YEAR BDS
