I’m very happy to finally introduce you to my favorite coffee ever! I’ve wanted to write this home story for a long time and it’s finally here! Of course, to visit Café Supelsaksad you would have to go to Estonia, to Pärnu, a small town on the southwestern coast of Estonia. But maybe you’ve always wanted to go there? If not, get inspired by these beautiful atmospheric images that the cafe owner kindly provided me.
A coffee to take off
Supelsaksad is run by Anna Huimerind, who knew since she was a child that one day she would have a cafe. With the help of her parents – graphic designer Ruth and architect Jaak Huimerind, and her husband, musician Jaan Karp, the charming café in the Estonian summer capital of Pärnu was built at the end of 2009, which survives the difficult winter months of the small town without any problems.
What makes Supelsaksad so special is first and foremost the ambience, which doesn’t overwhelm despite the lush wallpaper, floral-patterned tablecloths, kitschy dishes and a strong mix of colors. Indeed, one feels truly relieved, especially when the ambience is accompanied by sumptuous cakes, excellent black tea and a glass of Prosecco. The food is always wonderfully different, prepared with love and a lot of imagination and is also ideal for vegetarians.

The furnishing process: the 1930s style freely interpreted
Graphic designer Ruth Huimerind recalls the bar design process this way:
«I was entrusted with the interior design concept and it had to be similar to the style I had practiced in my old house. The challenge was to make all seven rooms uniform and at the same time different, without having to have a lot of financial resources.
My husband Jaak contributed with plans and technical drawings and my son-in-law, a musician by profession, turned out to be a specialist in building and plumbing work.
My daughter Anna, the current owner of the place, and I started choosing the wallpaper. We chose William Morris and the perfect interplay of the otherwise very different wallpaper patterns still amazes me today!
The bar needed about ten tables and about forty chairs and we didn’t have the money to buy high quality antiques. So we spent months rummaging through all sorts of warehouses, second-hand shops and recycling centers and actually came back with our hands full. We found solid oak dining tables, Viennese wicker chairs, high quality cherry wood chests of drawers! In 2009 we were the trend setters in terms of recycling! Of course we had to renovate and repaint the furniture first. But the result remains to be seen!
Designing the pink counter with the wood cladding was perhaps the most difficult task. I tried to get the size and spacing rhythm correct using a paper template. There were many wooden ornaments on the facades of the surrounding houses and I had never seen a counter with such decoration, so I thought it would be very interesting to make it for the bar.
Another important issue was the lighting conditions. I thought it was particularly important that the atmosphere had a soft, warm light, achieved thanks to a large number of beautiful floor lamps and freshly covered lampshades.
The rooms are designed in four main colors: pink, enamel blue, electric blue and turquoise green. These bright colors are trendy and cheerful, go well together and bring a little modernity to the 1930s look. We also hung on the walls photos of old Pärnu and modern beach scenes in XXL format, which appear seasonally. The absolutely surprising thing is that no one before us had used the “golden years” of the spa town of Pärnu as a design element in their interior design. Even though the city is famous for its 1930s atmosphere!
In the veranda the old wooden parts and windows have been repainted. Nothing more was needed to reveal an incredibly fascinating room. Add beautiful wallpaper, a soft pink sofa and you have one of our guests’ favorite rooms.
Café Supelsaksad is not easy to find because it is located in an inconspicuous detached house in the immediate vicinity of Pärnu beach. But local residents and now more and more tourists with detailed travel guides also know this. In summer you sometimes have to wait for a table, but the food, service and atmosphere are worth it!
