As part of my blog series on interior design tips and home stories, today I introduce you to the Stuttgart interior designer Regina Fischer who will now be available to advise us with various furnishing tips and housing ideas. The studied designer and passionate painter designs her clients’ living and commercial spaces using a holistic approach, focusing on the residents’ personal style. How he lives, what mistakes are often made when furnishing and which furnishing tricks always work: this is what he tells us now.
Dear Regine, can you describe your philosophy in furnishing living spaces?
Life is a process and spaces accompany it externally. Sometimes it’s about «EVERYTHING has to be different, but how?», sometimes it’s about development, about «What is important to me, what suits me? What do I want to keep? What needs to go and how can I integrate what is valuable to ME in a meaningful and positive way so that it becomes NEW, a WHOLE?» So it’s not primarily about the zeitgeist and fashion, but rather about finding your own style.
How did you get into interior design consultancy?
This concept of individual spatial conception has existed for 18 years and during this time it has changed over and over again. After many years of experience in the field of classic interior design, the following occurred to me in the waiting room of a doctor’s office: 1. This could easily be done better – with a few but skillful steps. 2. Who actually hires an interior designer in this country? 3. What do everyone else do who still needs aesthetics, functionality and well-being and is looking for professional support?
What furnishing styles can you find in your home?
There’s a style in my house that doesn’t exist anywhere else. This combination of some good individual pieces, selected by Ikea, restored from bulky waste and lots of art can best be described as eclectic. I like clarity and purism, but also lush fullness. Here both exist hand in hand.

The design of living spaces: where are the most mistakes made?
Um. In «hiding» and «camouflaging» things you don’t want to see. In the uniform «dispersion» of things, decorative elements and colors. This creates chaos. However, order and structure are essential principles of design.
What wall colors would you always recommend?
Soft natural tones in combination with white. Personally I like the WARM GRAY tones. They form a warm and discreet background and leave a lot of freedom for color and style combinations.
What are the three most important aspects when furnishing an apartment and where should you proceed carefully?
Naturally, it is essential to have a clear understanding of your needs and desires. Sometimes you need someone to ask the right questions.
Once the foundations have been gathered, the question of priorities arises. How can I create generosity? Which wall is important in the room? By what means do I place accents and what remains in the background, visually speaking?
What current interior design trend do you particularly like?
After all the elegant white and high shine, I like the mix of all kinds of styles, shapes and materials. This looks very relaxed and allows for freedom. The clean elegance of the last 10 years, on the other hand, has offered little tolerance for your. Sometimes it’s incredibly beautiful when everything is taken care of down to the last detail, but it doesn’t work in everyday life, in private life… when the wrong teacup destroys the whole picture.
Why should you get interior design advice from an interior design consultant?
The layperson approaches things differently than the professional. This is the case in all industries. Even in interior design. Good “work preparation”, i.e. clarifying, asking, thinking, planning… and then implementing it in a targeted way leads to different results… and usually saves money on all the bad purchases and mistakes.
What inspires you in your work?
I love working with materials, colors and shapes. I am inspired by nature, art and, above all, introspection.
Your best trick that you often use when designing your living space?
Does it make sense to find out what I use my budget for? Which piece do I really spend money on and which can also be implemented cheaply. Good floor coverings, for example, are rarely the center of attention, but form the basis for everything else in the room, add value or devalue, are durable and represent a relatively high cost factor. Here it is worth paying attention to quality and moderation.
I think it’s important to have things around me that make me happy, even years later.
