The trend towards more natural cosmetics started 10 years ago in Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania. Inspired by the countless Finnish natural cosmetics labels, for example today in Estonia there are around 50 different manufacturers. Some of these use very unique materials, invest a lot of money in product development and research, and are mostly the result of the individual needs of the founders. But there are also companies born, for example, from university research.
So it’s an exciting field worth taking a closer look at. The labels presented here are my personal favorites, whose products I have tested and can recommend wholeheartedly. Have fun discovering and trying!
AESTI – Estonian medicinal peat for hair
I became aware of the AESTI brand last year through praise in Estonian fashion magazines. The innovative shampoos, historical and body masks as well as shower gels are made from Estonian medicinal peat and contain numerous bioactive substances and minerals. The shampoo takes some getting used to as it is almost black and hardly foams (which is actually always a good sign). But the result is incredibly soft and elastic hair, which is usually achieved using laboratory chemicals. The manufacturers also promise stronger and healthier hair. All I’m saying is: definitely try it!
You can buy the shampoo directly from the manufacturer in the SHOP.
MÁDARA – Latvian nature for your skin
MÁDARA is probably the best-known natural cosmetics brand in the Baltics. Founded by Latvian Lotte Tisenkopfa-Iltnere, the company transforms precious substances from Latvian nature into effective creams, shampoos, face masks, body lotions and much more. The cosmetic products can be purchased in all three Baltic countries and since last year shipping has been free via a German-speaking online shop. The products are not cheap, but they are really worth owning! All my facial care products are called MÁDARA and are always ordered in large quantities during discount campaigns that take place from time to time.
Here are my favorites:
Daily defense cream – an all-rounder at an unbeatable price that provided my face with rich hydration all winter and absorbed very quickly. The cream has replaced my night cream and occupies a permanent place in my care products for the colder half of the year.
Moisturizing lotion – I searched for a long time and tried countless products until I finally found this body lotion. Important criteria for me: the cream must be easy to apply, absorbed quickly And, above all, it must be visible even the next day. This body lotion can do all that and is also a 100% natural product. It will stay with me for a long time and I will always recommend it to friends and acquaintances.
SOS moisturizing cream – my day cream as a base before applying the toning fluid. It smells so amazing that I want to reapply the cream every half hour. It works quickly and leaves a very fresh feeling. Now I’m slightly addicted because the cream makes me awake and alive. The much needed luxury when you don’t get enough sleep and have a busy day.
JOIK – Estonian pioneer of natural cosmetics
JOIK is one of the natural cosmetics companies born out of personal necessity. Founder Eva-Maria Õunapuu was looking for paraffin-free candles for long winter nights. Unable to find any, he ended up creating his own scented candles using soy wax. These became very successful relatively quickly and candles were soon followed by soaps, oils and body creams. Founded in 2005, JOIK was also one of the first labels I brought with me to Germany for myself and as a gift for friends. You can purchase JOIK products via the JOIK website.

White chocolate bath truffles – my absolute favorite bath product! It is very fun to bring the truffles into the water, as they slowly dissolve with a bubbling sound, releasing the embedded rose petals and best of all: you don’t need to put any cream on after the bath! Thanks for the shea butter!
Facial mask with green tea and peppermint – Green clay face mask penetrates deep into the pores of the skin, eliminates dirt and excess sebum, and helps shrink pores. It invigorates cells, nourishes and refreshes. Unlike conventional ready-made masks, JOIK provides only the powder, which you need to mix with an equal amount of water, milk or chamomile. The effect is huge! Be sure to try it! Suitable for normal, oily and combination skin.
Lip balm – Since I scanned all my cosmetics for harmful substances using the ToxFox app and discovered that many conventional lipsticks contain hormonally active chemicals, I have only purchased lipsticks from natural cosmetics manufacturers. I discovered this lip balm from JOIK in Estonia last summer and immediately got a pink version for my daughter :). Harmless because 100% natural ingredients, velvety and delicate. Perfect for everyday use.
NURME – effective natural cosmetics with an indispensable character
Nurme Looduskosmeetika is an Estonian manufacturer with some of my personal highlight products. Founded in 2006, initially only handmade soaps were produced. NURME now offers 100% natural products for the body, hair and wellness area. I discovered the label during one of my purchases in Tallinn about five years ago and, with some skepticism, I picked up a lavender shampoo. Since then, every time I return to Estonia, I repurchase my favorite products presented below. But it’s even simpler: NURME also ships to Germany via its online shop for €12.90 shipping costs.
This Exfoliating foot soap NURME has been the favorite product of Anne & Stiil, Estonia’s leading fashion magazine, for countless years, and I always make sure I have a sufficient supply of soap at home. The soap gently removes calluses and even grass stains by scrubbing. Ideal care for your feet without much effort.
Lavender shampoo – one of my first Nurme products and has remained a highlight to this day. The shampoo has a pleasantly delicate scent, the hair is soft and shiny after washing and the scalp shines with health.
Body peeling with marine minerals – I take this peeling with me to the sauna every week and every time I look forward to the sensation after washing off the peeling. I smell like peppermint and my skin has gained a protective layer of moisture that lasts for several days. It is important to stop using shower gel and body lotion after peeling – this reduces its effect!
TURBLISS – Deep care with healing peat
Yes, I know, another Estonian label specializing in converting Estonian medicinal peat into natural cosmetic products. But there is simply a lot of this peat in the country! It is rich in countless minerals, humic acids, trace elements and much more. As the producers, who among other things dig the peat themselves, tell us, these bioactive compounds penetrate deep into the skin and restore its elasticity. Peat acts as an effective anti-wrinkle treatment, purifies, treats skin problems, relieves acne and psoriasis, accelerates skin metabolism, stimulates and tones the skin.
I purchased TURBLISS facial oil last year and use it alternately with Madara products as a night cream. It absorbs quickly and is incredibly effective. A little daily hydrating treatment for your skin! But the masks also received great response from the Estonian media.
