Although at first glance using the refrigerator seems like child’s play, the truth is a little different. Being one of the appliances we use every day, and therefore of particular importance, the refrigerator must be used taking into account some simple but useful rules. For example, regulating the temperature in the refrigerator is a very important detail.
By setting an optimal temperature, the food will have excellent storage conditions and at the same time the refrigerator will not be ruined. But what is the ideal temperature for inside the refrigerator? This is the topic of our article.
You’ve probably noticed that most refrigerators offer the ability to set the temperature to your liking, but you’ve probably hesitated to use this option, not knowing which setting to choose. Well, here’s everything you need to know about setting the temperature in your refrigerator and freezer:
The history of refrigerators: when did these fantastic appliances appear?

Have you ever thought about the history of refrigerators? Well, if today we have smart refrigerators with top functions and technologies, as we only saw in films, the need to preserve food in the long term has always existed. How did they keep them fresh in the past?
Well, refrigerators are now common household appliances because we are used to them. However, beyond that, people had much more work to do in order to create a place that provided optimal conditions for food storage.
For example, people had to remove ice from lakes and use snow to cool food. Both snow and ice were placed in pits specially dug for food storage. The pits were then covered with grass and branches.
Even in ancient Egypt and India it was customary to water the outside of the pots so that evaporation would cool them.
The first cold storage of food is believed to have been carried out by the Persians, who used an ice-filled pit known as the Yakhchal.
After a long time, in 18th century England, servants used the ice collected in winter, and then stored it in the so-called iceboxes. Here, the ice sheets were filled with salt, flannel and stored underground. Gradually the first ice boxes appeared and at the same time the sale of ice. At first the ice loss was high, but with the isolation of the ships it was significantly reduced.
Harvesting ice was not at all easy, so a method of producing it artificially was increasingly desired. And this was first realized by William Cullen, a Scottish professor.
He designed the first refrigerating machine in 1755. To build it he used a pump to create a partial vacuum and a container of ethyl ether. By boiling the ether, the heat was absorbed and thus ice was produced. However, it took a long time before a truly functional device appeared.
The first refrigerator appeared in 1922 and at that time it was not cheap at all. At the very least, if you take a look at our range of refrigerators, you will immediately see that today these appliances can be classified without hesitation as affordable. Back then you had to pay about $800 to buy a refrigerator. Today with this money you can buy a top model.
If initially toxic gases were used to work, in 1930 Freon appeared as a much better alternative. After just 10 years, the mass production of refrigerators began, devices without which we could not imagine what life would be like today.
Let’s put the story aside a bit and talk about the topic of our article: how many degrees should it be in the refrigerator?
How many degrees to set in the refrigerator to achieve an ideal storage environment?
In order for the refrigerator to operate according to optimal parameters and at the same time for food to benefit from excellent conditions to stay fresh for longer, it is advisable to set a temperature between 2 and 7 degrees Celsius. You can do this using a simple button.
As a general rule, you should not be content with leaving the factory preset temperature, as it may be lower than the recommended value.
What temperature should the refrigerator be in summer? And winter?
Storage conditions may vary depending on the season. For example, in summer, when temperatures exceed 30 degrees, it will be necessary to immediately put the food in a cool place. Consequently, during the summer period you could set a lower temperature value than usual, precisely because the food is subject to heat.
In winter, however, you can increase the refrigerator temperature by up to 5 degrees. And this is because the environment will be cooler, so storing food will be easier, without the refrigerator having to work in demanding mode.
However, you will also have to think about how hot or cool the room in which the refrigerator is located is, in order to choose the optimal temperature. The frequency of opening the refrigerator as well as the food contained in it are details that, in turn, can influence the set temperature.
How to correctly place food in the refrigerator and freezer?
Refrigerators are wonderful, but to fully enjoy them you need to maintain them properly. How is it done? Well first of all it is important to set the correct temperature, which we have already established, but the positioning of the food in the refrigerator also plays an important role.
The side compartments, positioned on the door, are ideal for storing bottles and other foods that you do not want to store at very low temperatures.
The central area of the refrigerator is ideal for dairy products, eggs, cakes or cooked foods. Sauces can also be placed in this area. They will benefit from a temperature of 4-5 degrees centigrade, which will ensure optimal conservation.
You must place the vegetables on the shelf dedicated to them. They need a temperature of up to 7 degrees Celsius.
Meat and fish should be stored at a maximum temperature of 0-1 degrees Celsius. Place them in the area specifically dedicated to them. You also shouldn’t store meat in the refrigerator for more than 2 days.
Before placing cooked food in the refrigerator, make sure that it has cooled down.
Furthermore, do not pile food in the refrigerator but leave space to allow access to cold air currents.
Other curiosities about the recommended temperature for the refrigerator
If you are wondering what the normal temperature in the refrigerator should be, know that it is usually between 2 and 7 degrees Celsius. However, you can change the temperature depending on the season. And this is because the needs are different.
As for the ideal location for the refrigerator, the answer is the kitchen. However, it should benefit from a well-ventilated space. And if the temperature is constant, so much the better. Do not place the refrigerator near a heat source or direct sunlight. The distance from furniture or walls must be at least 10 cm.
Cleaning the refrigerator is also very important. This should be done as often as possible. This way it will be kept in the best conditions. Cleans both inside and outside. And if your refrigerator doesn’t have the No Frost function, defrost it frequently.
Finally, you may be wondering how much food to put in the refrigerator. Well, don’t overload it! The more food there is, the more energy consumption will increase.
This is the information you need to know about the ideal temperature in the refrigerator. We hope that our information has been useful to you!
