Last week was a truly exciting time for all lovers of home design: this year’s international furniture fair IMM took place in Cologne. And as always I was there as a visitor to see what’s new from my producers Furnishing trends to be discovered in the coming years.
THE NEW FURNISHING TRENDS 2025 – WHAT WILL COME AND WHAT WILL REMAIN
The 2025 furnishing trends bring out some new style elements, but they also play a lot with what has already emerged in the last two years:
- Marble surfaces are still in fashion, used as table tops for dining tables, coffee tables or side tables, as an element of a sideboard or as a decorative object;
- Woven shapes, which have slowly progressed in recent years, are the trendsetters of 2025;
- Natural materials are also on the rise, especially in the form of solid wood tables, bedroom furniture and wool carpets;
- The variety and mix of different shapes and colors will influence our furnishing styles in the coming years. In particular, mirrors, as objects of creative design, were clearly visible at the Cologne furniture fair;
- Elements of retro style and mid-century design are successfully combined with modern interior items;
- Showcase revival.
And here’s what the interior design trends will look like in the coming years:
Marble surfaces
Marble tables, coffee tables and even walls are still a trend in the factories of large furniture manufacturers such as Wittmann, Flexform, Walter Knoll, Rolf Benz and Ligne Roset, although they are no longer as present as last year. Marble is often used in combination with other materials such as wood, glass or fabrics.
Woven furniture
Wicker furniture is celebrating its peak this year. Whether it is chairs, armchairs, coffee tables, sofas or beds, the shapes of the weaves are seen everywhere. Combined with natural materials, they offer more coziness, warmth and comfort and therefore fully correspond to the current spirit of the times.
Natural materials for an oasis of well-being
Wood, especially solid wood and natural materials such as wool or felt, are big new themes in the furniture sector. Stressful everyday life with maximum concentration requires relaxation and peace as a counterpoint. This is made possible by the tactile elements present in the furniture, which allow you to dine in the evening on a solid wood table and then get comfortable in bed with a good book and a warm high-quality virgin wool blanket. The presentation of the bedroom as an oasis of well-being was clearly visible at the furniture fair and will certainly become even more important in the coming years.
Variety of shapes and colors
This year’s furniture fair successfully combines a wide variety of shapes and colors. Landscapes of round sofas, some in coordinated colours, as well as square or kidney-shaped coffee tables, original armchairs and unusual decorative elements, bring creativity and a relaxed atmosphere to living spaces. A trend that will last for a few years.
Retro style and mid-century design to complement modern decor
Retro style has awakened or continues to live as a trend. This year the kidney shape was used not only on coffee and coffee tables, but also on dining and meeting tables. Classic dressers and lounge chairs also display elements of mid-century and retro style.

Trendy news: showcase
It’s understandable that window displays are becoming fashionable. In times of streaming and e-books, large, sumptuous shelves are less and less necessary. Instead, you need furniture that allows you to stage your life. Wall shelves or narrow, decorative display cases allow you to showcase selected favorite objects, treasured tableware, travel mementos, special plants and photos of favorite people. I am very excited to see what possible showcase applications we will see at IMM Cologne next year. It definitely won’t be boring.
Of course there was much more to see and discover at the Salone Internazionale del Mobile than what is shown here. For the sake of clarity I will limit myself to the essentials and look forward to your comments on current trends. What do you like and what doesn’t necessarily have to be? What do you think about furniture trends? Do you follow them or do stylistic developments leave you indifferent?
