Keep it organized, I love how it saves you time and effort! Generations have grown up with this saying. This everyday wisdom still holds true today. A well organized and tidy warehouse saves time, nerves and money. How to easily plan and organize your pantry and closet is the topic of this article.
Setting up a storage room – possible places for a storage room
It wasn’t long ago when, when building a house, it was customary to provide a room with direct access from the kitchen. If there is no pantry next to the kitchen, there are other options for setting up a storage room. For example, under a staircase. While an understairs closet doesn’t offer as much storage space as a separate closet, this space can usually be used for at least one shelf. A niche in the corridor can also be used as a storage room. Equipped with shelves or a suitable wardrobe, this area also offers plenty of space for more order in the apartment. Even a small closet is better than no closet.
Warehouse planning: how much space is available?
One of the most important tools when organizing a closet is a tape measure or folding rule. Before you go out and buy new shelves for your closet, you should measure your available space. Then you can consider which shelves fit best in the storage room. In principle there is nothing wrong with equipping the warehouse with at least one floor-to-ceiling shelf. However, you should keep in mind that sooner or later you will also need to reach the upper shelf areas. It is best to provide space for a small folding ladder with 2 or 3 steps.
Built-in shelves often allow for better use of space. However, there should always be space for long objects such as brooms, mops and the like. The quickest and usually cheapest solution is ready-made shelves, available in every hardware store for little money. A special place to store it is the area above the washing machine, which often remains unused. Special washing machine cabinets can help in this case and provide storage options. The inside of the door also offers space. Bag hooks or small hanging shelves that can be easily mounted on the door leaf further increase the available space. Last but not least, in most warehouses there is also space inside above the door for one or two shelves on which numerous items can be placed.
Organizing the warehouse: how much space is needed for what?
Once you know how much space you have available, you can plan what you want to store in the closet. In the storage room, cleaning products, groceries, kitchen appliances, baking molds, Christmas and Easter decorations and many other things that are not needed every day are usually stored. We must therefore first consider which objects to put in the closet and which could be better placed in the bathroom, attic or cellar.
The next step is to consider how or where certain items can be stored. For example, transparent boxes with lids, baskets or bags are very useful for organizing the closet. Save space and related utensils can be stored together. Once the design has been prepared and everything necessary has been purchased, the reorganization of the warehouse can begin.
Before putting things away you need to do the clearing: set up a storage room
First you should empty everything in the storage room. This is the best opportunity to dispose of expired food or to check whether paints and varnishes from the last renovation are still usable. What you will probably never use again can be given away or sold. After cleaning up, you should sort through all items and banish anything that is only very rarely used to the basement or attic. Only what remains after sorting returns to the warehouse. As part of the reorganization it is also possible to repaint the warehouse or carry out a thorough cleaning before assembling the shelves and putting everything away again.
Light things up, put down heavy things – tidy up the closet properly
Once the shelves have been arranged and the hooks have been screwed to the ceiling, we begin to organize the closet. If possible, move light items upstairs and place heavy items on the floor. Arrange the shelves so that the bottom shelf is at least 20cm from the floor so you can easily clean the bottom. If you need to store heavy items, such as paint buckets, the shelves should be placed higher.
Start by putting things away at the top. Arrange everything the way it belongs together. For example, from food to food, from cleaning products to cleaning products. Store rarely used items, such as Christmas decorations, in boxes with lids. This way you will prevent them from gathering dust over time. If you use boxes, opaque baskets or bags, consider attaching a sticker or note indicating what’s inside. With meaningful labeling you can save yourself a long search.
Creating order is one thing, maintaining it is another
A well-organized and tidy storage room and a carefully stocked pantry make everyday life easier. To ensure it stays that way, you should maintain order. An important point is to maintain the basic order as much as possible once planned. This means putting new canned food, cleaning supplies, or other items back where the old ones were. Storing things should also be done as quickly and easily as possible. If you have to move and rearrange other items first, order will suffer. It’s also important to schedule a regular cleaning day for your warehouse. We recommend tidying up the storage room once a week if necessary. The best opportunity for this is the general cleaning day. Regular tidying up has the advantage that no mess has yet occurred.
A well-organized warehouse is not rocket science. But it’s a nice feeling to know that everything is in order and that rarely used things can be found quickly. With a little care and without too much effort, you can create a lot of storage space in your home. Whether it’s in the pantry, under the stairs, in the wardrobe or on the shelves in the hallway.
