A comfortable dining table is often the heart of the entire apartment. Whether for eating, talking or simply socializing with family or friends. To make it really cozy but still have enough space for everyone, there are a few points to consider when choosing the right dining table. In this guide we will show you what dimensions your dining table should ideally be, how wide and high dining tables are, and what dimensions you need to consider when purchasing.
Round or rectangular dining table?
Choosing a round dining table or a rectangular model is first and foremost a matter of taste and also depends on how many people you want to seat and how much space you have for the dining table. So that everyone has enough space at the side and on the table when eating, the rule of thumb is a depth of 40 cm and a width of 60 cm for each person. So it should be a table for 4 people sitting facing each other a minimum size of 120 x 80 cm. So that there is still enough space for beautiful table decorations, glasses, pots, etc., simply add 20 cm and you get a table width of 100 cm. When choosing your dining table, be sure to pay attention to the width of the table legs. Because the minimum clearance always applies to the space between the table legs. If necessary, choose a length of 140 cm.
If you are thinking of a round dining table, make sure that the room is large enough and that the table can be easily reached from all sides. Since a round dining table always looks great when it is positioned as centrally as possible in the room, you are not as flexible with the placement options as with a rectangular table. Although you can place a rectangular or square table against the wall if necessary, this is not possible with a round table.
The right table size for four, six or eight people
Whether a rectangular dining table or a round dining table: so that everyone at the table feels completely at ease, the furniture must be carefully designed. In the following two tables you will find an overview of the different dining table sizes for four, six or eight people.
Recommended dimensions for rectangular dining tables:
Recommended dimensions for round dining room tables:
You can easily calculate the number of seats on the round dining room tables yourself. For example, if the table has a diameter of 200 cm, take this value for Pi (3.14) and then divide the result by 60. The final result is 10.466. On a table with a diameter of 200 cm there is enough space for 10 people.
The correct height of dining tables
The dining tables are available in different heights, the standard ones range from approximately 70 to 80 cm. The right height of the dining table always depends on the height of the respective chair, because you can only sit comfortably at the table if there is enough space between the seat and the table top. The rule of thumb here is a distance of about 28-30 cm. The table height and chair height must therefore be coordinated, this especially applies to chairs with armrests. If the armrests are too high or the dining table is too low, the chairs may no longer fit under the table when moved.
Where to place the dining table? The right place for the dining table
Are you wondering where to best place your dining table? In sufficiently large or open dining rooms, the ideal is to place the dining table in the center of the room: this way it will form the center of the dining room and the room will appear harmonious. It is important that there is enough space on all sides to push the chairs out of the way when standing up and also to be able to pass comfortably in front of the table. The rule of thumb is: 1.0m – 1.20m of space on each side where people are sitting. If a sufficiently large passage towards the wall is also necessary, provide a distance of approximately 80 cm. If you want to place cabinets, display cases or chests of drawers around the table, make sure that the doors or drawers can still be opened easily.

To ensure that your dining table is particularly attractive, it is of course ideal to place it, if possible, in the center of the room. However, in small rooms or in the kitchen there is not always enough space for this. In this case it is better to use the corners of the room or place the dining table near a wall and choose chairs that can be brought as close as possible to the table to save space.
