Wool carpets: advice on quality, cleaning and care

Guide to wool carpets - advice on care, cleaning and purchasing

Wool carpets have been used for centuries and are still extremely popular today. No wonder, because the natural wool material not only looks great, but also offers a variety of properties that carpet lovers will appreciate. Here we will tell you what else you should know about wool carpets before buying one.

What does wool carpet mean?

Wool carpet is the generic term for various types of wool from which wool carpets are usually made. The most common type of wool is Sheep’s wool. But also other types of wool like Angora wooldie Alpaca wooldie Cashmere wooldie Merino wool or the Mohairwolle they are used to make a wool carpet. However, not all of these types of wool are suitable for making carpets, as the wool fibers are sometimes too sensitive or their structure is not suitable. Therefore, sheep’s wool is usually used for wool carpets.

Another popular type of wool is the Schurwolle. Virgin wool is wool that comes directly from live sheep and therefore has a special quality appearance. A virgin wool carpet is generally considered to be of higher quality because virgin wool is «cooler» than conventional wool.

Virgin wool carpets: care tips

Advantages of wool or virgin wool carpets

A virgin wool rug or wool rug immediately gives any room a cozy and warm atmosphere. However, carpets are not just about looking good, they should also have some practical properties such as robustness, thermal insulation and dimensional stability. Being a natural material, wool is ideal for this. Wool fibers have a loose structure, are slightly wavy and very voluminous, which allows the carpet to keep its shape. Thanks to its equally hollow structure, wool can store both moisture and heat very well and is particularly beneficial for the feet on cold days. Wool fibers are also good at absorbing odors, neutralizing them, and releasing them back into the room air.

Another advantage of a wool carpet is its high elasticity and stability. It maintains its original shape for a long time; even unsightly pressure marks from furniture and dirt have little effect on it.

Care and cleaning of wool carpets

To ensure that your wool carpet stays beautiful for a long time, you should follow the following care and cleaning tips:

General care: Vacuum once a week to remove dirt and dust. Regular vacuuming prevents dirt buildup. New carpets may cause lint, but this will resolve over time.

Removing stains from wool carpets: It is important to remove any stains immediately. Absorb liquids with a cloth or colorless towel. Local cleaning products suitable for wool carpets are also fine, as long as they do not rub the carpet heavily. Don’t get the carpet wet; allow damp areas to dry. Dried stains can be easily removed by scraping them with a knife.

Wash wool carpets: If your wool carpet needs a thorough cleaning, it is best to use professional cleaning services. The carpet should not be soaked in water, bleached or dry cleaned.

If you want to clean the carpet yourself, only use wool cleaning products. To do this, simply prepare a soapy solution of wool detergent and apply it to your wool rug or virgin wool rug. Then dab everything with a cloth and when the carpet is dry again, vacuum it again.

Wool carpets with vacuum cleaner: Vacuum a wool carpet or virgin wool carpet only with a smooth floor nozzle, otherwise the delicate fabric may be damaged and become too rough.

Wool carpet storage: If you need to temporarily store the rug, roll it tightly around a long cardboard tube to avoid creases in the rug. The carpet must be stored flat in a dry place, without heavy objects on it.

Scandinavian design wool rugs

A Scandinavian design wool rug is always beautiful and timeless. The Scandi look is characterized by very natural and discreet colours, but also by surprising patterns such as geometric shapes, lines, diamonds and stripes. The sober and light colors of the carpet such as grey, beige or white easily match all furnishing styles.

Scandinavian wool rugs look particularly beautiful in the living area, for example in front of the sofa or as a base and eye-catcher for the coffee table. Even when placed openly in the room, a Scandinavian-style wool rug radiates a special feeling of comfort and warmth. A simple, high-quality rug made of wool or new wool can also create a cozy and welcoming atmosphere in any bedroom or dining room.
