Elegant tablecloths, whether used for festive occasions such as weddings, birthday parties or christenings, or simply in everyday life, add splendor and glamor to our lives. And it is a very simple and economical way to create atmosphere and emphasize your style and individuality with a beautiful tablecloth.

But what should you consider when choosing and purchasing a tablecloth? Which materials have proven useful in everyday life and which for festive occasions? What size tablecloth is suitable for my table and how much overhang is allowed? How do you care for tablecloths and what lifestyle do tablecloths made from different materials suit? You can find the answer to these questions below.

Linen, cotton tablecloths, etc. – which material is suitable for my tablecloth?

The tablecloths are not only beautiful and decorative, but also protect the table surface from dirt, unsightly scratches and dents. It is always better to choose the tablecloth and tablecloth material according to the occasion. Because sometimes the tablecloth just needs to be practical for everyday life, and for festive occasions it can be a little more elegant. The different materials give the tablecloth a different look and thus underline the respective ambience.

Cotton tablecloths

Cotton tablecloths have always been an absolute classic. The durable material is characterized by high tear and abrasion resistance and is ideal as an everyday tablecloth for the dining table. You can always bring variety to your table with bright colors and designs. Every home cannot miss an elegant white solid cotton tablecloth. Very simple and classic, without too many frills or with elegant embroidery, it creates a very special atmosphere on your banquet table. The neutral white tablecloth can also be easily combined with a colored runner.

Polyester tablecloths

Tablecloths made of polyester or polyester blend are colourfast, dimensionally stable and very robust. Since moisture does not penetrate the material as easily as cotton, unsightly stains can be easily removed during washing. Polyester tablecloths are therefore extremely easy to clean and are also suitable for simple everyday use.

Linen tablecloths

Whether in classic white or rather bright colours, a linen tablecloth is the absolute highlight on your dining table. No other material looks as elegant, natural and fresh as linen. The pure elegance of a linen tablecloth offers a great basis for festive decorations, be it a birthday party, a wedding or an atmospheric Christmas party. The natural product linen consists of a linen fiber whose long fibers do not form lint. Thanks to the stain-resistant structure, stains can be removed very easily.

The linen tablecloth has many other advantages. It is extremely robust and tear-resistant, remains in shape even after washing, has a high absorbency and air permeability and also has a mothproof effect. When placed on the table, it falls beautifully and has a lot of volume and stability. A linen tablecloth works on its own due to its elegant appearance, but also fits harmoniously with any decoration made from different materials such as porcelain, glass, wood or metal. Linen tablecloths in the colors white, light grey, beige or soft pink almost automatically create an atmospheric atmosphere and are ideal for birthday parties, weddings and christenings.

Oilcloth

If you are interested in a washable tablecloth, then an oilcloth tablecloth is just the thing. The very durable tablecloths have a PVC coating that can be easily cleaned with a damp cloth. Something can go wrong at breakfast or dinner and it is also the ideal tablecloth for a barbecue in the garden with friends, because it always forgives spilled red wine or coffee.

Which size of tablecloth is suitable for my table?

Before choosing your new tablecloth, you should pay attention to the right size and measure the length and width of your table first. A tablecloth should always be the right size, because if it is too short it can slip easily and fall less well. If it is too long it can prevent your guests from sitting comfortably at the table and limit their freedom of movement.

Tablecloth size for the square table

The following table shows how big the tablecloth should be for a square table. Usually add 40-60cm to the table dimensions (length and width) to determine the right size for your new tablecloth.

Tablecloth size for the round table

To determine how big the tablecloth should be for a round table, you must first measure the diameter of the table. Add an overhang of 40-60cm to the size of your table. You can find an overview of common table sizes and corresponding tablecloth sizes in the table below:

How much overhang for the tablecloth makes sense?

The following applies to all table shapes: To ensure that the tablecloth fits well and is neither too short nor too long, add 20-30 cm of overhang to the measured dimensions of your table, double the overhang and add it for both length and width. Here is an example: the measured size of the table is 120cm x 180cm. Your tablecloth should therefore be at least 160 x 220 cm. For a round table, also add an overhang of 20-30cm on all sides, so add a total of 40-60cm to the diameter of the table.

Washing tablecloths: tips for caring for durable materials and colors

In order for you to enjoy your new table linen for a long time, you should pay attention to proper care. It is best to read the information on the label first and follow the respective care instructions. Depending on the material of the tablecloth, different washing temperatures are required.

Cotton tablecloth

A colored tablecloth can be washed at 30 – 40 degrees in the color program. The white cotton tablecloth can be washed at up to 95 degrees if it is very dirty or stained. To ensure that colored or patterned tablecloths maintain their vibrancy, you should use a bleach-free detergent.

Tablecloth made of polyester and polyester blend

If the tablecloth is only slightly dirty, washing at 30 degrees is usually sufficient. You can even tackle heavier dirt at 60 degrees. Unlike the cotton tablecloth, the polyester blanket comes out of the washing machine quite dry. You can then quickly iron any creases inside out.

Linen tablecloth

The linen tablecloth can usually be washed up to 60 degrees without shrinking or deforming. Then it’s best to iron it on the hottest setting while it’s still slightly damp, so the blanket will be smooth and soft again. For those who don’t like ironing, there are also non-iron linen tablecloths.

Oilcloth

Wax-coated tablecloths can be easily cleaned with a damp cloth and, if necessary, a little detergent. If the tablecloth is very dirty, you can usually put it in the machine up to 40 degrees. To avoid damaging the upholstery, avoid using detergents or fabric softeners that contain chlorine.

Rustic, Scandinavian or modern style: which tablecloth suits me and my style?

Giving style advice for choosing a tablecloth is not easy, because the choice is wide and most of us end up choosing plain-colored tablecloths, in cotton or linen. And this too is a safe choice, whatever the prevailing style in the house. But here we can obviously give some advice for choosing the tablecloth, depending on whether you want to maintain a modern, Nordic or country style in the kitchen or dining room.

Country style tablecloths

Tablecloths with floral patterns and motifs, such as delicate scattered flowers or rose petals in red or pink, fit well into the romantic style of the country house. Mediterranean colours, such as bright yellow or orange, but also other strong shades of green or blue, leave nothing to be desired and harmonize particularly well with light wooden tables. Vichy paintings or tablecloths with a striped effect also express the country and rustic atmosphere particularly beautifully.

Scandinavian design tablecloths

Is your apartment furnished in Scandinavian style and are you looking for matching Scandinavian table linen? Typical of the Scandi style are simple furniture made of light wood such as pine or birch, but also white, and especially soft pastel colors set the tone here. These facets are also reflected in the decoration. Natural fabrics, subtle patterns and colors, but also strong contrasts with red or blue really complete the Scandinavian look. With tablecloths made of airy linen in light colors such as beige, white, dove gray or pink, you can bring a lot of freshness and elegance to your table. Or choose an earthy brown, deep blue or soft green for everyday wear.

Tablecloths with a modern design

Simple, plain-colored tablecloths fit very well into a modern, more puristic lifestyle. Here you can choose your favorite color to match your furnishings and thus individually underline your modern lifestyle. A white dining table, for example, can be dressed up invitingly with delicate pastel tones, but also with strong colors or dark tones such as anthracite or grey. Tablecloths with patterns and graphic designs also create visually beautiful accents.
